Sacred Heart Parish Faith Formation:
Our Approach
Sacred Heart Parish is committed to Lifelong Faith Formation or Whole Community Catechesis.
Whole Community Catechesis is an approach to parish or school religious education (adult education and “CCD”) through which youth and adults as well as children are invited to participate in faith formation programs throughout the year. The entire community thus becomes the focus of all we do in religious education or catechesis. Read on for more information on how this works.
Developing Households of Faith
In Whole Community Catechesis, what happens at Mass is tightly connected to what happens in the children’s sessions. The liturgy of the Word from Sunday is the starting point. Catechesis or religious instruction must flow from that Word of
Scripture and each student is invited to “break open the Word,” to share their faith about what they believe.
Also in Whole Community Catechesis, parents play a vital role alongside all the other members of the community. Catechesis is not just for children! It’s for everyone. Every Catholic is invited to know and love the church, to walk with
Christ in his or her daily life, and to gather faithfully together on Sunday for the parish Mass.
Added to that, Whole Community Catechesis places great emphasis on developing households of faith. It’s certainly true for a child, but it’s also true for everyone, that no matter how effective our experience of faith might be at the parish, what really counts is how we live that faith in our every day lives at home! If our homes are not places where the faith is shared and lived, then the work of catechesis is like sowing seed on rocky ground.
Our Focus: The Liturgy of the Word and Eucharist
The source and summit for all Catholic life is the community celebration of the Mass. Therefore our primary focus is on the Liturgy of the Word and Eucharist. Many adults and young adults in our parish prepare for the Sunday Liturgy by
meeting in small communities to discuss the scripture readings and how they apply to daily life.
The Sacred Heart community takes seriously the mandate from the Second Vatican Council that all are called to a “full, conscious and active participation” through various ministries of the liturgy: as members of a choir, Hospitality
Ministers, Lectors, Ministers of the Eucharist, altar servers and members of the congregation.
Children's Programs
During the 9:00 and 11:00 Masses the children participate in their own Liturgy of the Word, listening to the word of God proclaimed in a simpler format with a “homily” activity to reinforce the lesson. At 10:00 the children who do not attend a
Catholic school attend a catechetical (religious education) session that is then expanded at home. This also includes preparing for First Reconciliation and First Communion. Once a month the children and their families gather for a family faith activity pertaining to the Church’s special celebrations during the year or other teachings of the Catholic Church.
Youth Programs
Sacred Heart Parish also has an active Youth Ministry Program (for Junior High and High School students) that incorporates social activities with elements of our Catholic faith as well as Confirmation preparation.
