SACRED  HEART  PARISH  FAITH  FORMATION

Sacred Heart Parish is committed to Lifelong Faith Formation or “Whole Community Catechesis”.

Whole Community Catechesis is an approach to parish or school religious education through which children, young adults, and adults are invited to participate in faith formation programs throughout the year.  The entire community thus becomes the focus of all we do in religious education or catechesis.

The source and summit for all Catholic life is the community celebration of the Mass.   Therefore, our primary focus is on the Liturgy of the Word and the Eucharist. We at Sacred Heart take seriously the mandate from the Second Vatican Council that all are called to a “full, conscious and active participation” through various ministries of the liturgy:  as members of a choir, Hospitality Ministers, Ministers of the Word, Ministers of Holy Communion, Altar Servers and members of the congregation.

In Whole Community Catechesis, what happens at Mass is tightly connected to what happens in the children’s sessions. The Liturgy of the Word from Sunday is the starting point.  Catechesis or religious instruction must flow from the words of Scripture.  During selected Masses, the children participate in their own Liturgy of the Word, listening to the Word of God proclaimed in a simpler format with a “homily” activity to reinforce the lesson.  Each student is invited to “break open the Word”, and to share their faith about what they believe. Periodically, the children and their families gather for a family faith activity pertaining to the Church’s special celebrations during the year or other teachings of the Catholic Church.

Children who do not attend a Catholic school can attend a catechetical (religious education) session that is then expanded at home.  This also includes preparing for the First Reconciliation and First Communion.   Sacred Heart Parish also has an active program to prepare our youth for Confirmation.

Parents play a vital role, as do other members of the Community, in Whole Community Catechesis.  Catechesis is not just for children…..it is for everyone!

Every Catholic is invited to know and love the church, to walk with Christ in his or her daily life, and to gather faithfully together on Sunday for the parish Mass.  In addition, Whole Community Catechesis places great emphasis on developing households of faith.   It is true for all of us, that no matter how effective our experiences of faith might be at the parish, what really counts is how we live that faith in our every-day lives at home!  If our homes are not places where the faith is shared and lived, then the work of Catechesis is like seed on rocky ground.
